MILWAUKEE - Looking to earn his spot in the NCAA Mideast Regional 1,500m, senior Tommy Schmitz made a solo trip to Atlanta, Ga., Friday, to compete in the Georgia Tech Track & Field Invitational. He not only earned his spot in the regional, finishing third in a time of 3:45.11, but set a Marquette record in the event, surpassing head coach David Uhrich's 23-year old mark.

"I am very thrilled to see one of my athletes beat the record," said Uhrich. "It is very exciting and I am very happy for him."

Uhrich's mark of 3:45.77 had stood since 1984.

Schmitz will also compete in the 800m, Saturday.

The MU throwers were also in action on Friday, competing at the Augustana Open in Rock Island, Ill. Junior Michael Boedeker (174-6) and senior Damian Anisko (169-11) finished 1-2 in the discus throw, each setting personal records en route to qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional. Only three have thrown farther than Boedeker, and four farther than Anisko, in Marquette history.

In the women's pole vault, junior Kristen Stoniecki placed first, clearing a height of 11-9.75, in her final meet of the season.

Senior Jenna Mahaffey set two personal records, the first in winning the shot put with a toss of 44-8.75, and the second in winning the hammer throw with a toss of 169-7. She also placed second in the discus with a season-best throw of 149-8.

Also competing in the shot put was freshman Rachael Thiel, who finished fourth with a toss of 40-8.75.
