Blake Johson Records Personal-Best Time in Steeplechase
May 14, 2010
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore Blake Johnson ran a personal-best time of 9:05.30 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational Friday evening to move closer to qualification for the 2010 NCAA West Preliminary Round.
"Blake ran well and hopefully it will solidify his spot in the regional," head coach Bert Rogers said. "It was tough on the athletes to come out right after finals were finished, but they were as ready and competed well. It was a good way to wrap up the season for most of them."
Johnson's time placed him second in the event, less than half a second behind the winner.
In addition to Johnson, junior Kristin Pelzel also set a personal best in the steeplechase with a time of 10:59.69 to finish seventh.
The top finisher of the day for the Golden Eagles was junior Alyssa Davis, who picked up an event victory in the triple jump with a distance of 11.33 meters.
Junior Olivia Johnson and senior Sarah Verdoliva also picked up top-3 finishes for the MU women. Johnson placed second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:29.96, while Verdoliva was third in the 800. Both women needed to shave a couple seconds off their personal bests to be in the discussion for regional consideration, but were unable to do so.
While most MU athletes were in competition at North Central College, the MU throwers participated in the Cardinal Invitational at Louisville.
In the throws, junior Catherine Benage recorded the top finish of the Marquette athletes at Louisville with a javelin toss of 38.35 meters to finish fifth. While in the men's discus, Jeff Kluge and Robert Bleem finished seventh and 10th, respectively.
For those athletes who did not reach marks granting them access into the regional or U.S. Junior Nationals, Friday marked the final competition of the outdoor campaign. The Golden Eagles who have qualified for the 2010 NCAA West Preliminary Round will return to action May 27-29 in Austin, Texas.
