NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Following a BIG EAST Championship sweep for both the Marquette men’s and women’s track and field teams, several MU distance runners put a stamp on the 2016 outdoor season with one final performance at the Gregory Final Qualifier hosted by North Central College on Thursday.

The Gregory Qualifier allowed student-athletes from across the region one more opportunity to submit a national qualifying performance. Unfortunately, no one competing on Thursday for the Golden Eagles advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary round, but they did put a solid finishing touch on an outstanding year.

Sophomore Alison Parker ran a time of 2:11.78 in the 800-meter run to take sixth place overall, while junior Clare McDonald placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:35.79.

In the men’s 1,500 meters, freshmen Brad Eagan (3:56.32) and Henry Mierzwa (4:00.20) each set personal-bests in their final race of the season, finishing in fourth and 12th place, respectively.

In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Maeve McDonald concluded her season with a respectable time of 19:04.57 on the women’s side, while sophomore Jack Carpenter turned in one final fast time, crossing the tape in 15:46.59 in the men’s race.

Freshman Hannah Gorin bested her previous career-best by nearly 7 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to place eighth overall with a time of 11:41.83.

For the majority of the team, the season is officially done. The Golden Eagles capped a tremendous year that saw the women sweep both the indoor and outdoor BIG EAST Championships and the men win their first outdoor team title. It marked the first time that both men's and women's teams swept the outdoor BIG EAST Championships and the teams combined to place 33 student-athletes on the All-BIG EAST squads.
