AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Kyle Winter and junior Kathryn Koeck each topped their seeded marks entering competition on Thursday at the West Preliminary Rounds of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Winter concluded his career as Marquette’s final competitor Friday evening by finishing 26th in the men’s 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.31. The Wales, Wis., native placed sixth in his heat and was two spots out of qualifying for Friday’s national quarterfinal based on time. He entered the meet seeded 46th overall.

Winter’s heat, the second of the evening, was the lone race to have five runners break the 1:50 mark. His time was one quarter of a second slower than that posted by the final individual to qualify for Friday’s quarterfinal. His mark was also faster than that of two runners who advanced by placing in the top three of slower heats.

The 2012 BIG EAST Conference indoor 800-meter run champion concludes his career as the program record holder in two events and among Marquette’s top-10 competitors all-time in seven individual events.

Winter also ran the 800 in 2011 at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Eugene, Ore., and placed 37th with a time of 1:51.96.

Koeck was the first athlete to compete on Thursday for the Golden Eagles and placed 22th, six spots ahead of her seed placement of 28. The junior notched her top throw of the afternoon on her second attempt with a toss of 189 feet, 4 inches (57.72 meters) to place fifth in the second flight.

In the women’s long jump, Marquette program record-holder Carlye Schuh was one of three athletes who failed to record a distance in the event. The Appleton, Wis., native was MU’s top finisher at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships earlier this month when she set a new program record in the long jump with a top leap of 20 feet, 1 1/2 inches (6.13 meters) to place second as the Golden Eagles’ lone All-BIG EAST honoree.

Senior Sarah MacCourtney will compete Friday at 6 p.m. in the women’s high jump, while sophomore William Koeck will throw the hammer at 2 p.m. Jack Hackett will conclude the weekend’s action in the 5,000-meter run under the lights at 8:45 p.m. Saturday.

Live results and streaming video is available of all the action throughout the weekend, courtesy of TexasSports.com.

All athletes in Austin are attempting to advance through this weekend’s preliminary rounds to compete in the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.  The Golden Eagles are represented by their largest contingent of student-athletes since they sent eight to Austin in 2010.
