Armstrong's Stellar Season Ends at NCAA West Prelims

May 27, 2017

AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman high jumper Daniel Armstrong concluded a strong season in his first year with the Golden Eagles as it came to end at the NCAA West Prelims at the University of Texas on Saturday.

Armstrong, who swept both the BIG EAST indoor and outdoor high jump titles, qualified for regionals with a personal-best and MU freshman record of 2.17 meters (7 feet, 1.5 inches). He cleared his very first attempt of the night with a solid jump over 2.00 meters (6 feet, 6.75 inches), but unfortunately missed on all three attempts at 2.05 meters (6 feet, 8.75 inches).

"He had a really fantastic freshman season," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Daniel has learned a lot, but still has a lot of room for improvement. He's obviously very gifted and very athletic and his form has improved. He has a bright future ahead of him."

With his season-best mark earlier this year, the Michigan City, Indiana, native qualified for the U.S. Track & Field Junior Championships, which will take place in Sacramento, California, June 22-25.
