May 28, 2010
AUSTIN, Texas - Four Marquette University track and field athletes competed Friday afternoon at the West Preliminary Round of the 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships with junior Peter Bolgert's 25th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase leading the way.
Both Bolgert and Blake Johnson placed among the top-30 finishers in the men's steeplechase. Bolgert was MU's top finisher with a time of 9:05.01, while Johnson finished 29th in 9:07.28. Johnson improved almost 20 spots on his seeded location as the 48th and final competitor in the field.
"I think Blake and Peter were right at the end of their fitness for the year," head coach Bert Rogers said. "This year they were able to get a lot of experience, including their first regionals. They gained a lot of confidence and we will expect big things out of them next year."
Senior Jayne Grebinski who ranked 16th in the region coming into Friday night's steeplechase, finished 34th with a time of 10:53.08.
"The race just got away from Jayne when she got tied up in the last few laps. It was hot and humid and she just couldn't overcome the conditions."
Senior Jeff Kluge finished 44th in the hammer throw earlier in the day with a toss of 53.09 meters (174 feet, 2 inches).
"It wasn't a great day, but the seniors (Grebinski and Kluge) meant a lot to the program and we will move on having benefitted from their contributions."
