McClelland Takes 10th at USATF Junior Championships

June 25, 2017

MILWAUKEE – Marquette University freshman Max McClelland placed 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2017 USA Junior Outdoor Championships held at Sacramento State University on Saturday.

“It was a solid effort for him, but not the place we were hoping for,” said Marquette head cross country and assistant track and field coach Mike Nelson. “He gave it everything he had and it was a great overall experience.”

Saturday’s conditions proved difficult for all competitors on Saturday, but especially trying for those competing in the steeplechase as temperatures were sitting around 97 degrees at the start of the race.

The Powell, Ohio, native clocked in at 10:00.06, finishing in 10th place behind Timothy Bason of North Carolina State, who edged two other runners at the finish line to win the race in 9:15.40.

McClelland now shifts his attention to the upcoming cross country season, where Nelson’s team showed great promise after a successful 2016 campaign.
