Jan. 21, 2015
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams resume their indoor season Friday, Jan. 23, when they travel across town to the John Tierney Triangular on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles will take on the host Panthers and the University of Illinois-Chicago at the Klotsche Center.
Field events are scheduled to begin with the men's shot put at 5 p.m. and at approximately 7:30 p.m., the women's 60-meter hurdles will kick off the events on the track. The 4x400-meter men's relay will conclude Friday's competition at roughly 9 p.m.
“The team is getting pumped for the triangular with UWM and UIC on Friday," Marquette head coach Bert Rogers said. "It is always a fun and exciting meet with what is usually a large crowd and a fun atmosphere. We are looking to continue building on the successes we had in Madison on Saturday.”
In the midst of what was an historic day for Marquette's track and field program and high jumper Wally Ellenson, several others shined for the Blue and Gold at last weekend's Wisconsin Open. Freshman Cassy Goodrich continued to turn heads, winning the 400-meter run in personal-best 56.48 seconds, which is the No. 2 mark in program history and a freshman record.
Fellow freshman Jennifer Parker also fared quite well in Madison, winning the 800-meter run in her debut race. Senior Samantha Kennedy tossed a personal-best mark of 55 feet, 6 inches in the weight throw and garnered a second place finish.
At the Wisconsin Open, Ellenson shattered MU's program record in the high jump with a mark of 7 feet, 5.75 inches (2.28 meters). His jump met the qualifying standard for world outdoors and is currently the No. 3 mark in the world. Ellenson will not be active during Friday's competition.
The Golden Eagles have claimed six event titles in their first two meets so far this season along with a slew of personal bests to open the indoor campaign.
At last season's John Tierney Triangular, the Marquette women topped their counterparts from Milwaukee 84-49, while the men defeated Illinois-Chicago 86-32 and fell 78-55 to Milwaukee.
Following Friday's action, Marquette travels to the University of Minnesota for the Jack Johnson Invitational on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31.
