Track and Field Performances of the Week: Koeck and Schuh
Jan. 29, 2013
Each week throughout the 2012-13 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, a men's and women's performance will be highlighted on GoMarquette.com as the Marquette Track & Field Performances of the Week.
MILWAUKEE - This week's Marquette Track and Field Performances of the Week feature two breakthrough performances from the Bill Bergan Invitational in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 26. The athletes, junior long jumper Carlye Schuh, and sophomore weight thrower William Koeck, are hitting their strides at the right time for Marquette, and continue to improve their respective marks.
On Saturday Schuh was able to best her competition in a deep long jump field, and notched an impressive mark of 19 feet, 5 ½ inches (5.93 meters), good for an indoor program record.
"I have been trying to stay positive and in a good mindset," Schuh said. "There were definitely a lot of good athletes at Iowa State so it was nice that they pushed me."
Schuh, who specializes in the long and triple jump, came into the year poised for a big indoor track season, and she is having just that.
"Carlye has been training at a very high level all year long and this was a very nice performance for her second long jump competition of the year," said Marquette assistant coach Nick Davis. "As we move closer to the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, it is our goal to mark those jumps and bigger. We know there's a lot more out there for Carlye."
Koeck also proved to be a very valuable piece for the men's team this weekend, as he was Marquette's best male finisher in his respective event, with a third-place finish in the weight throw. His BIG EAST Conference qualifying throw of 59 feet, 3 ½ inches also ranks him at No. 4 all-time in the Marquette record books.
Schuh, an Appleton, Wis., native is currently enrolled in the physical therapy program. Koeck, whose sister Kathryn also competes for Marquette as a thrower, hails from Winneconne, Wis., and plans to major in marketing.
