Ellenson, Goodrich Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors
Feb. 10, 2015
NEW YORK - Marquette University junior high jumper Wally Ellenson and freshman runner Cassy Goodrich were named BIG EAST Conference Men's Field and Women's Track Athletes of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office Tuesday, Feb. 10. For Ellenson, it is his second such honor of the season, while Goodrich posts her first career BIG EAST weekly accolade.
Ellenson, who competed for the first time since his record-setting performance in his season debut, jumped 2.15 meters (7 feet, 0.50 inches) at the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana last Friday, Feb. 6. Ellenson currently holds the top-two winning marks among all BIG EAST competitors in 2015, including the nation's highest mark of 2.28 meters (7 feet, 5.75 inches), which occurred back on Jan. 17, at the Wisconsin Open.
Goodrich continued her stellar start to her freshman campaign, racing to a new Marquette freshman record in the women's 400-meter run at the Meyo Invitational last Friday. Her finish of 55.18 seconds ranks No. 1 in the BIG EAST this season and is the second-fastest time ever at Marquette.
The time, which captured 13th place at the meet, also puts the Franksville, Wisconsin native 85th in the NCAA rankings as a rookie. Goodrich also led the DMR relay team to a meet title and Marquette record as she posted a season-best 400-meter split time of 54.9 seconds in the process.
Both Golden Eagle standouts shared weekly honors with Erik Peterson of Butler and Ann Dagrin of St. John's, who pulled in men's track and women's field athlete honors as well.
Marquette is back in action Friday, Feb. 13, as it heads to Allentown, Michigan to compete in the GVSU Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State University. Events are set to begin at 10 a.m. central time.
