Felix and Halloway Honored by the BIG EAST

BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes of the Year: Male | Female

NEW YORK –
Marquette University senior Alex Halloway and junior Monique Felix were named Marquette’s Institutional BIG EAST Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, presented by Sunkist, the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee announced on Thursday. Both will receive $2,000 graduate scholarships.

Halloway, a senior on the Marquette men’s track and field team, is a two-time All-BIG EAST performer. He holds the eighth-best triple jump mark all-time with a distance of 14.06 meters (46-1.5 feet), accomplished at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in 2015. He helped lead the Golden Eagles to their first-ever outdoor team championship in 2016.

The Springfield, Illinois, native is a Ronald E. McNair Scholar (2014-present) and has earned Dean’s List and BIG EAST Academic Excellence recognition in each of his first three years. He’s a representative on the Student Affairs Vice President’s Advisory Board and serves on the student leadership team for Athletes in Action. Halloway also made an international service trip to the Dominican Republic as part of a study surrounding immigration.

Halloway will graduate cum laude in May with a degree in international affairs and a minor in German.

Felix, a junior on the Marquette women’s track and field team, is a five-time BIG EAST champion, including a two-time defending indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon champ. Her 10 podium finishes have highlighted her BIG EAST success during indoor and outdoor competition and has led to the Golden Eagles winning back-to-back indoor and outdoor team titles.


 

 

The Sheboygan, Wisconsin, native is the Marquette College of Business Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient and Terry J. Kohler Honors Scholarship recipient. She represented Marquette at the NCAA Leadership Development Program in Washington, D.C. in 2017 and attended an international business study abroad trip to China earlier this year.

Felix serves as the SAAC Vice President for finance and is a SAAC team representative. She’s also a STAR (Students Taking Active Roles) leadership development program participant and facilitator.

Eric Dick of Butler and Alexis Walkden of Seton Hall were named the overall BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes of the Year and will receive a $4,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or post-graduate studies.

Twenty student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 10-member institutions) were also named as BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners.
