Golden Eagles Set For 2011 BIG EAST Indoor Championships
Feb. 17, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams will compete Saturday and Sunday in their sixth BIG EAST Conference Indoor Championships since joining the league prior to the 2005-06 school year. The 2011 Championships will be held on the University of Akron campus at the Stile Athletics Field House and competition will begin Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT with the 60-meter hurdles of the women's pentathlon.
A live video feed of the entire meet can be found at BIGEAST.tv, while live results are also available courtesy of BIGEAST.org.
The Golden Eagles have had 37 qualifying marks this season and will have 35 student-athletes (18 women, 17 men) make the trek to Akron.
Nick Szcech will participate in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs, events in which he holds the top Marquette times this season. Szczech's time of 14:17.52 in the 5,000 is the third-best mark in school history and ranks third in the BIG EAST this season. That time was also among the top-10 marks in the NCAA when it was recorded on Jan. 29 at the Bill Bergan Invitational in Ames, Iowa.
Among the Marquette athletes competing in multiple individual events are fellow distance runner Brice Cleland, who will join Szczech in the 3,000 and 5,000, and sophomore sprinter Chanel Franklin who will compete in the 60- and 200-meter dashes.
Lauren Darnall enters the weekend as the sixth-ranked pole vaulter in the conference. Darnall set a personal and school record back on Dec. 3 at the Blue and Gold Invitational by clearing the bar at 12 feet, 8 3/4 inches (3.88 meters). To eclipse her personal best, the junior pole vaulter has recently switched to a larger pole, but recent attempts to clear the four-meter mark have fallen just short.
The lone representative for Marquette in the 800-meter run at the BIG EAST Championships will be sophomore Kyle Winter. The Wales, Wis., native holds the fifth-best mark in school history after he posted a time of 1:51.67 on Feb. 5 at the Meyo Invitational. Winter currently sits outside the top 10 in the 800 meters at No. 11 in the BIG EAST rankings this season. He could also participate in the distance medley relay and the 3,200-meter relay.
Another student-athlete sitting just outside the top-10 in her event is freshman Carlye Schuh who is 11th in the conference in the long jump. Schuh set the Marquette freshman record on Jan. 22 at the dual meet vs. Milwaukee with a distance of 18 feet, 7 3/4 inches, the fifth-best distance in school history.
The Golden Eagles will have an opportunity to earn some points in the weight throw, where senior Jamie Roth for the women and men's junior Robert Bleem are both among the top-10 athletes in their respective flights.
Freshman Kristen Gaffey is 10th in the conference in the women's shot put with a top mark of 46 feet, 5 1/4 inches and will be joined on the men's side by senior captain Joe Kohut in the event.
The Golden Eagles placed 12th on the men's side at the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championships and 15th on the women's side.
