Track & Field Performances of the Week: Hein and Kaplan
Feb. 20, 2013
Each week throughout the 2012-13 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, a men's and women's performance will be highlighted on GoMarquette.com as the Marquette Track & Field Performances of the Week.
MILWAUKEE - This week's Marquette Track and Field Performances of the Week feature two outstanding efforts from athletes who competed at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Freshman pole vaulter John Kaplan and junior sprinter Kate Hein were both able to elevate their performances to new highs at the Spire Institute.
Hein turned in a personal-best and Marquette indoor program record with her breakthrough time of 1:13.48, which shattered her old personal-best in the 500-meter run by an astounding two seconds. Her time was good enough to get her into the finals of the event, where she went on to finish in sixth place.
In addition to the 500, Hein also ran an impressive anchor-leg in the 4x400-meter relay, which finished with a time of 3:48.98, good for No. 4 all-time in program history.
Kaplan was also able to register a season-high mark, and MU freshman record in the pole vault with his mark of 15 feet, 3 inches (4.65 meters). Kaplan's big day also earned him sixth place in the meet.
