MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads head into this weekend's BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in New York City with increased expectations that come with having eight event leaders on the league's 2013-14 indoor performance lists.
The Golden Eagles are aiming for their highest team finishes as members of the conference, which they joined prior to the 2005-06 campaign. The MU men have never placed higher than ninth during the indoor conference meet, while the women's best finish is 11th.
The meet, which will be competed at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the New York Armory for the fifth time in six years, will run from Friday, Feb. 21 through its conclusion late on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Events begin Friday at 7 a.m. Central time (8 a.m. local) with the women's pentathlon, while events on the track and in the field commence 9 a.m. CT. Friday's final event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT with the women's distance medley relay. The meet will resume Saturday at 3:25 p.m. CT and is slated to wrap up with the awards ceremony at 7:50 p.m. CT.
Senior Carlye Schuh is the lone MU student-athlete to have earned All-BIG EAST honors last season when she placed second in the long jump at the outdoor championships. Schuh will look for her first conference title as the league's leading long and triple jumper this season. She leads her next closest competitor in the BIG EAST by over a foot in the long jump with a Marquette record of 6.06 meters (19 feet, 10.75 inches), which she set on Dec. 6 at the first meet of the year.
Schuh's triple jump mark is five inches ahead of second place on the league's performance list and the senior captain sits fifth entering the meet in the women's 60-meter dash.
In addition to Schuh's high conference marks, two other MU women sit atop their respective events. Senior Kristen Gaffey leads the way in the women's shot put and freshman Omo Tseumah has burst onto the scene in the women's high jump and tops the league by over an inch thus far this indoor season.
Tseumah is also joined by classmate Bridget Bodee and sophomore Tatyana Pashibin in the high jump, both of whom are among the top four individuals in the event. A point scorer at last year's meet with a fourth-place finish, Pashibin has made a transition into a multi-event athlete with the new configuration of the conference. She is one of only three BIG EAST athletes to have competed in the pentathlon this season but tops the list amongst the trio.
The weight throw leads the way for the Marquette men with the top two individuals in the league. Junior William Koeck and redshirt junior Bret Hardin combined to win three of the five BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors given out during the indoor season and sit first and fourth, respectively, in MU history in the event.
Koeck set Marquette's program standard of 20.11 meters (65 feet, 11.75 inches) on Jan. 31 at the Jack Jennett Invitational at UNI and looks to improve on his eighth-place finish at the conference meet from last season. Hardin placed fourth at last year's indoor meet, ahead of Koeck, and the duo will compete Friday at noon CT.
Freshman Omaru Abdulahi leads the way in the men's high jump in the BIG EAST at a height of 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10.75 inches), while senior Michael Saindon sits second in the event at 2.05 meters (6 feet, 8.75 meters). Saindon was fourth at the 2013 indoor championships and both are looking to become the first all-conference men's high jumpers at MU since Raymond Bratchett in 2007.
The Golden Eagles have had a total of four men earn indoor All-BIG EAST accolades (top-three finish) and six women, including a pair of 4x800-meter relay squads.
Former sprinter Kyle Winter claimed the indoor men's 800-meter run championship to claim MU's lone indoor BIG EAST title.
