NEW YORK - Marquette University seniors Mary Luba and William Koeck were named Marquette's Institutional BIG EAST Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the conference's Academic Affairs Committee announced Friday.
Luba, a mechanical engineering major on the women's soccer team, is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic team honoree and was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-North/Central Region First Team in 2013 and second team in 2014.
The Shorewood, Wisconsin native was a key piece of the Golden Eagles' offense the past two seasons. In 2014 she led MU with 16 points, including six goals, and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Luba was also named a 2014 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's All-Northeast Region Second Team member.
After a successful 2013 campaign, that included BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships, Luba was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the BIG EAST tournament.
Koeck, a human resources and marketing double major, has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team in each of his previous three academic years at Marquette.
The Winneconne, Wisconsin, native has been a standout on the men's track and field squad since he was a freshman, when he was named the newcomer of the year. He was an NCAA Second Team All-American at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships and has earned men's team MVP honors in each of the last two campaigns.
Koeck is the reigning BIG EAST champion in the weight throw and hammer throw and is the program record holder in both events.
Seton Hall's Shelbey Manthorpe and Villanova's Sam McEntee were named the overall scholar-athletes of the year. Both individuals will receive a $4,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or post graduate studies.
Twenty student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 10 member institutions) were also named as BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners.
