Track and Field Set for Final Weekend of Indoor Competition
March 4, 2010
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads will send four student-athletes to the Alex Wilson Invitational and three to the Iowa State NCAA Qualifier this weekend. Competition begins at the Alex Wilson Invitational Friday evening and will continue Saturday morning, while the events at Iowa State will commence Saturday morning. Heading to the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame will be high jumpers senior Erynn James and freshman Cheldon Brown. James topped her school record in the event earlier this season with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1.78 meters at the Marquette-Milwaukee dual meet on Jan. 23. Brown has been improving as the season has progressed, reaching a collegiate high of 2.01 meters at the BIG EAST Championships on Feb. 21. Also competing at Notre Dame will be Sarah Verdoliva, the school record holder in the 800-meter run and Kyle Winter in the 400-meter dash. Heading to Iowa State will be seniors Jeff Kluge and Rachel Thiel, in addition to junior Jonathan Kusowski. For Kluge, the trip will allot him one final attempt at breaking Dan Fax's school record in the weight throw (62-feet-7 3/4 inches). Kluge moved up to second place on the MU list earlier this season on Dec. 11 at the Iowa State Holiday Preview by reaching a mark of over 58 feet. Kluge and Kusowski will compete in the weight throw at 11:30 a.m., while Thiel's shot put competition will begin at 1 p.m.
