Track Heads To Indiana's Polytan Invitational
April 21, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams return to action Friday and Saturday at Indiana University's Polytan Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. A pared-down Marquette squad will compete at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, where Friday's competition is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. CT. Saturday's action is set to begin at 10 a.m. CT with the women's shot put, men's discus and the men's and women's long jump.
"We have a smaller squad traveling this weekend," Marquette head track and field coach Bert Rogers said. "Most of the field event regulars will compete, but many of the top runners will be off this weekend as we prep for the next two weekends at the Drake Relays and then BIG EAST Conference Championships."
One runner looking to notch a BIG EAST Conference qualifying mark is freshman Sarah Ball. Ball impressed many during the indoor season, placing her name on both the 600- and 1,000-meter run top-10 lists, and will attempt to shave just over a second off her personal best time in the 800-meter run.
"Many of those competing in running events this weekend will be chasing BIG EAST marks. Sarah Ball is a good example of someone who is very close and has been running well," Rogers said.
While the runners may not have a full roster this weekend, it will be business as usual for Marquette's top throwers in the hammer throw.
Senior Jamie Roth set a personal best by one and a half feet at the DePaul Division I Invitational on April 16 and needs another two inches to climb to fourth on the all-time MU list.
On the men's side, associate head coach and throws coach Mike Koenning has a plethora of options at his disposal. Four of the conference's top 14 hammer throwers compete for the Golden Eagles with redshirt junior Jonathan Kusowski and freshman Bret Hardin leading the way.
Kusowski recorded the second-best distance (185 feet, 7 inches (56.59 meters)) in school history at DePaul, while Hardin is not far behind at fourth all-time (184 feet, 8 inches (56.28 meters)). Both have a good shot at breaking the school record (Damian Anisko, 188 feet, 9 inches (57.53 meters)) this season.
"Our hammer group is really starting to click," Rogers said. "Jamie Roth really is putting things together and I am looking forward to seeing her throw this weekend. On the men's side, Jon Kusowski and Bret Hardin are really developing into a nice 1-2 punch for us. It seems like they take turns each week beating each other. I wouldn't be surprised to see both of them break the school record this year."
This weekend's meet is the first for the Hoosiers to display Billy Hayes Track's new Polytan surface, which was installed last May. Indiana will host the East Preliminary Round of the 2011 NCAA Championships May 28-30. MU will compete in the West Preliminary Round the same dates in Eugene, Ore.
Squads from meet-host Indiana, and BIG EAST rivals Cincinnati and USF will compete along with teams from Xavier, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Illinois. The meet will be individually scored with live results available, courtesy of IUHoosiers.com.
