MILWAUKEE -- One final tune-up remains for the Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams as preparation continues for the 2015 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Championships, which are just two weeks away. Both teams will be in action Friday, May 1-Saturday, May 2, to take part at the Dave Rankin Invitational hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The goal in mind this week is individual preparation as some will look to improve marks and build momentum, while others will take the time to focus on rest in order to put themselves in prime position come BIG EAST.
"It's a tune-up meet," head coach Bert Rogers said. "With finals next week, a lot of individuals will have the opportunity to rest and focus on exams. Those competing might not have any finals issues and want to build some momentum heading into BIG EAST.
"For the most part, it's about what the athletes need to best prepare for the BIG EAST Championships," Rogers added.
Both squads are coming off a successful week at the Drake Relays and Benedictine Twilight and looking to capture peak performance ahead of BIG EAST Championships with this final tune-up at Purdue.
On the women's side, Kathryn Koeck will look to keep her momentum going in the hammer throw, as well as the shot put. The senior currently holds the Marquette record in the hammer with a throw of 61.12 meters (200 feet, 6 inches), which ranks 12th among regional qualifiers.
Samantha Kennedy and Maya Marion will also compete in throws events on the women's side. Others highlighting the field events will be Nicole Jaffke, who nearly cleared 12 feet in the pole vault at Benedictine a week ago. Bridget Bodee, Terica Harris, Taylor Keating, Tatyana Pashibin and Gemma Tedeschi will also be featured in jumping events.
For the men, Wally Ellenson looks to build momentum after his third-place finish in the high jump at the Drake Relays last week. The national hopeful currently sits eighth-regionally with a mark of 7 feet, 2.25 inches.
"For Wally, it's been a bit of a transition," Rogers said. "He was doing full-on basketball every day with some high jump practice that consisted of a little technique work. For him it's transitioning from one sport to the next and I think he's getting comfortable now."
William Koeck and Bret Hardin will look to improve on solid marks in the hammer throw. Koeck's toss of 61.18 meters (200 feet, 9 inches) at the Mt. SAC Relays has him 26th on the regional list, while Hardin isn't far behind.
Others to watch for will be Dwayne Dash (long jump), Will Ford (pole vault) and Joel Swanberg (high jump, pole vault and javelin).
On the Track
For the women, long distance runners Kellie Greenwood and Brittney Feivor will have the week to rest for BIG EAST after outstanding marks last week at the Drake Relays. Others will have a chance to gain momentum in the form of Abigail Busse (steeplechase) and Meghan Carroll (1,500). Mariah Frank, Maeve McDonald, Maggie O'Loughlin and Sarah Poirier will all compete in the women's 5,000.
On the men's side, one of Marquette's top sprinters in Brandon Bell will try to improve his 100 and 200-meter dash times heading into BIG EAST. Other sprinters looking to do the same will be Marcell KirkmanBey in the 110-meter hurdles and Anton Rice, Glenn Lawrence Jr., Michael Corr, Alex Halloway and Daniel Sweeney in various other sprints.
Friday's action will feature the hammer throw at 3 p.m., while the remaining competition will take place Saturday with field events at 10 a.m. followed by running events at noon.
