MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams will take 42 athletes to compete at the 2013 BIG EAST Conference Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5 in Piscataway, N.J.
The 2013 championships will be competed at the Bauer Track and Field Complex on the campus of Rutgers University.
Live results will be available through BIGEASTTrack.com, while video will also be available.
Action on Friday will get underway at 11 a.m. CT for Marquette with the women's hammer throw, followed by the men's event at 1:30 p.m. CT. Competing on the women's side is the duo of junior Kathryn Koeck and sophomore Samantha Kennedy. Currently, Koeck holds the No. 2 mark in program history, while Kennedy has the fifth-best mark. Kennedy and Koeck will be looking to build off of the success they achieved last year in the meet, when they notched fifth- and eighth-place marks, respectively.
On the men's side of the hammer, program record-holder William Koeck will compete alongside senior teammate David Carbajal. Koeck's most recent throw of 59.01 meters would have gotten him first-place by nearly a meter at BIG EAST last season, but he is expected to receive quality competition this year. The Marquette men's hammer crew scored seven points at last year's championships, with athletes finishing in third and eighth place.
On Saturday, a busy day of action will get underway for MU beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT, with the trials of the women's 1,500-meter run, with the men to follow at 12:45 p.m. CT. The freshmen tandem of Molly Hanson and Kayla Spencer are slated to run in the 1,500 along with the 4x800-meter relay on Sunday at 12:50 p.m. CT. Both have had excellent freshman seasons, notably Hanson, who during the indoor season notched the fastest freshman mile time in program history.
For the men in the 1,500, redshirt junior Spencer Agnew will lead the Golden Eagles alongside redshirt freshman D.T. McDonald and sophomore David Sajdak. All three will be looking to build off recent success where each hit personal-best marks in the last meet at the Benedictine Twilight Invitational. The trio will also compete together in the 4x800-meter relay at 1:05 p.m. CT on Sunday.
Continuing on Saturday, juniors Kate Hein and Gretchen Homan--holders of the No. 3 and 4 marks in program history in the 400-meter dash -will run the 400 at 1:30 p.m. CT. In the men's 400, junior Connor Stengel will get his shot to improve upon his No. 9 time in program history, which he achieved this month. Hein and Homan will also be competing in the 4x400-meter relay on Sunday at 1:20 p.m. CT, while Stengel will be doing the same for the men, in the last race of the day.
In the men's 800-meter run, senior Kyle Winter will look to notch his highest finish ever at a BIG EAST outdoor meet. Winter, the 2012 indoor 800 conference champion, has never finished above fifth at an outdoor meet and will look to top his season-best time of 1:50.28.
Winter will also attempt to move into contention for a spot in the West Preliminary Rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Championships if he can shave some time off his season's best. The trials of the men's 800 will be run on Saturday at 2:50 p.m. CT, while the final is slated for 11:30 a.m. CT on Sunday.
After topping her own MU record twice on Saturday, April 27 in the women's long jump, senior Carlye Schuh will look to best her seventh-place finish from last season at the BIG EAST meet. Schuh currently owns the No. 4 mark in the BIG EAST this season and the No. 21 distance in the NCAA West Region.
In addition to Schuh competing on Saturday in the field events, the men's high jump will feature senior Cheldon Brown and junior Michael Saindon, who will each attempt to clear 6 feet, 10 inches for the first time this season.
