STORRS, Conn. -- Matt Piekarski sits in first place through the first five events of the decathlon in the first day of competition at the 2006 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex at the University of Connecticut.

Piekarski won the 100m (10.92) and shot put (12.29m) events, en route to accumulating 3,857 points - 198 points better than Sean Berg of Connecticut, who sits in second. Berg entered the competition with the league's best decathlon performance this season. The five remaining decathlon events will be completed, while the individual track and field events will commence tomorrow.

CSTV will be on site throughout Saturday and Sunday's events, taping the action, which will be condensed to one hour and televised via tape delay on May 15 at 7:00 p.m. CT. Former USA Olympian and two-time bronze medalist high jumper Dwight Stones will be providing play-by-play commentary, while Lewis Johnson will provide the analysis.
