Tedeschi Collects BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week Honors

May 5, 2016

NEW YORK –
Marquette University sophomore Gemma Tedeschi was named BIG EAST Conference Field Athlete of the Week after breaking a school-record on Sunday, the league office announced this week.

Tedeschi is the first BIG EAST female field athlete to win multiple weekly awards this season after doing so back on April 6 as well. As a team, MU has claimed four of the six BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week awards during the 2016 outdoor season.

On Sunday, Tedeschi set the new outdoor standard for Marquette in the pole vault, leaping to a mark of 3.86 meters (12 feet, 8 inches) to take second place at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative meet on Sunday.

The Palmer Lake, Colorado native broke the previous record that stood for more than 8 years by just one half-inch. Tedeschi extended her top mark in the BIG EAST this season by 6.5 inches on the next closest competitor. Her mark currently ranks 69th in the West Region.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they compete at the Wisconsin Twilight in Madison. It will serve as MU’s final tune-up prior to the BIG EAST Conference Championships.
