NEW YORK – Marquette University throwers Bret Hardin and Kristen Gaffey were named the BIG EAST Conference Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

Gaffey placed fifth in the women’s discus and set the No. 3 mark in Marquette history with a toss of 48.45 meters (158 feet, 11 inches) at Purdue’s Dave Rankin Invitational. The Iowa City, Iowa native was also fourth in the shot put at a distance of 13.84 meters (45 feet, 5 inches), which registers as the top mark in the BIG EAST Conference this season. Her discus distance is the second-best mark in the league in 2014.

Hardin recorded the second-best throw in the BIG EAST this season in the hammer throw on Friday afternoon. The Acworth, Ga., native placed third in the event with a lifetime-best toss of 58.66 meters (192 feet, 5.50 inches).

Senior Carlye Schuh is the only other MU athlete to earn a weekly honor during the outdoor season when she was named the women’s field athlete of the week on April 11 following Marquette’s yearly trip to California.

Hardin was also the men’s field athlete of the week during the indoor season on Jan. 22 after Milwaukee’s John Tierney Triangular.

The Golden Eagles return to action on May 10-11 in Villanova, Pa., for the 2014 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Villanova Stadium.
