MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads will compete on May 10-11 in Villanova, Pa., for the first time since 2011 at the 2014 BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Golden Eagles are aiming for their highest team finishes as members of the conference, which they joined prior to the 2005-06 campaign. The MU men have never placed higher than 10th during the outdoor conference meet, while the women's best finish is 11th.
The meet, which will be competed at the Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium, begins Saturday, May 10 with the 100-meter dash of the decathlon at 8 a.m. Central time. Field events are slated to commence at 9 a.m. CT with the women's hammer throw, while events on the track will begin at noon CT. Action will wrap up Saturday following the 4:45 p.m. CT men's 10,000-meter run.
The decathlon again begins action at 8 a.m. CT on Sunday with the men's 110-meter hurdles and the meet is slated to conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 2:05 p.m. CT.
The Golden Eagles enter the meet after a very successful indoor championships in February in which they claimed seven individual event titles and had 17 student-athletes earn all-conference recognition. The women's squad earned its first-ever team trophy with a third-place finish, while the men were fourth overall.
Senior Carlye Schuh, who was named the women's most outstanding performer at the indoor meet, is the lone MU student-athlete to have earned All-BIG EAST honors last season when she placed second in the long jump at the outdoor championships. Schuh won the long jump at the 2014 indoor meet, was second in the triple jump and was fourth in the 60-meter dash.
The Appleton, Wis., native is slated to compete this weekend in the long and triple jumps in addition to the 100-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay. Schuh sits first on the BIG EAST outdoor performance list in the long jump, third in the triple jump and ninth in the 100.
On the men's side, junior William Koeck returns after a fourth-place finish at last year's meet in the hammer throw. Koeck was a USTFCCCA Second Team All-American in the weight throw during this indoor season and was named the BIG EAST Indoor Men's Most Outstanding Field Performer after winning the event at February's league championships.
The Winneconne, Wis., native, who also competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds last year in the hammer throw, currently sits atop the BIG EAST performance list in the event and is fourth in the discus, another event in which he will compete on Sunday.
Reigning BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week Bret Hardin notched a new personal best of 58.66 meters (195 feet, 5 inches) in the hammer throw at Purdue on Friday and trails only Koeck among conference competitors this season. Hardin will also throw the shot put along with Patrick Stuart, while Stuart will be the lone men's thrower to compete in three events this weekend (shot put, hammer and discus).
Freshman John Krzyszkowski, who leads the rest of the BIG EAST by over 12 feet in the men's javelin, will look to claim his first title in his first conference outdoor meet at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday. The Mississauga, Ontario native is the Marquette record holder in the event and was a bronze medalist at the 2013 Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships last August.
Senior Kristen Gaffey leads the way in the women's throws, ranking first in the conference in the shot put and second in the discus, both marks were recorded last weekend at Purdue. Teammate Samantha Kennedy also holds a pair of top four marks in the league this season in both the hammer throw and javelin.
Indoor women's high jump champion Omo Tseumah will look to add outdoor honors next to her name at noon CT on Sunday and will be joined by fellow freshman Bridget Bodee and Tatyana Pashibin, both of whom have marks in the top three of the BIG EAST during the outdoor season. Pashibin was the league's pentathlon champion and will also compete this weekend in the heptathlon.
Former decathlete Matt Piekarski (2006) and the 2008 women's 4x800-meter relay team of Cassie Peller, Katlin Millin, Kaitlyn Chambers and Sarah Verdoliva are the only BIG EAST outdoor champions in program history.
