Official BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – In the season’s final set of BIG EAST weekly awards, Marquette University senior Dwayne Dash Jr. and junior Maya Marion were honored as Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

The honor was the first of the season for both Dash and Marion, while Marquette was honored for the fourth time this year on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Dash led the men’s side in the final meet before the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships this weekend, turning in a first place finish in the long jump at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic on Friday, May 5. His mark of 6.90 meters (22 feet, 7.75 inches) was just shy of his season-best, which currently ranks second-best in the BIG EAST this season. The Savannah, Georgia, native looks to defend his long jump title from 2016 at the BIG EAST Championships this weekend.

Marion, who will try to become the BIG EAST's first-ever three-time winner in the shot put this weekend, also had a strong tune-up at Wisconsin.

The Aurora, Illinois, native recorded the top mark in the BIG EAST this season with a shot put distance of 14.69 meters (48 feet, 2.5 inches). The toss ranks 55th in the West Region and was good for fifth place on Friday. She added a personal-best in the hammer throw, as well, registering a distance of 51.58 meters (169 feet, 3 inches), which currently ranks fourth in the league, and placed 11th in the discus with a throw of 40.86 meters (134 feet, 1 inch).

Marquette, which claimed its first BIG EAST outdoor team championships in 2016, will look to defend those titles when the 2017 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships commence at Villanova on Friday-Saturday, May 12-13.
