Marquette T&F Sends Four to NCAA West Preliminary Round
May 20, 2016
INDIANAPOLIS – The Marquette University men’s and women’s track and field programs will send four student-athletes to compete for a shot at an individual berth to the NCAA Championships as they head to Lawrence, Kansas to take part in the NCAA West Preliminary Championship, May 26-28.
Fresh off BIG EAST titles, the men’s and women’s squads will each have representatives at the University of Kansas, which hosts the regional meet that comprises the top-48 individuals from each event and the top-24 relay teams looking for a chance to qualify for the NCAA National Championships, June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.
The Golden Eagles will send sophomore Cassy Goodrich to compete in the 400-meter dash on the women’s side, while senior Wally Ellenson (high jump), and juniors John Krzyszkowski (javelin) and Dwayne Dash Jr. (long jump) will represent the men’s side at the NCAA West Preliminary Championship.
Goodrich currently boasts the 24th-fastest 400-meter time in the West Region with a mark of 53.73 seconds, which she ran at The Beach Invitational back on April 15. The Franksville, Wisconsin native was one of just four BIG EAST participants to earn all-conference honors in three events last weekend.
Goodrich helped the Golden Eagles win their first outdoor team title by taking second place in the 400-meter dash, third place in the 200 and anchoring the second-place finishing 4x400-meter relay team.
Ellenson, who is making his fourth consecutive trip to the West Preliminary, is also looking to become a four-time outdoor high jump All-American. The Rice Lake, Wisconsin took fifth place at nationals a season ago, following eighth-place and runner-up finishes in his first two seasons as a member of the University of Minnesota.
He currently ranks eighth in the West Region with a mark of 2.20 meters (7 feet, 2.5 inches), which he jumped at the Gibson Invitational back on April 9. The mark was also the same height that won him the 2015 NCAA West Preliminaries and qualified him to nationals.
Krzyszkowski will look to qualify for his first national championship meet when he takes the 16th-best javelin mark to the West Preliminary Round at Kansas. The Mississauga, Ontario native broke his own school record and set a new personal-best when he threw for a mark of 69.39 meters (227 feet, 8 inches) at the Illinois Twilight on April 23.
The junior fell just outside of the top-12 qualifying spots to nationals a year ago, taking 18th overall with a then-school record setting mark of 65.54 meters (215 feet), which was just 5 feet, 10 inches shy of tying for the final qualifying spot.
Dash Jr. will make his first regional appearance in the long jump with the 45th-best qualifying mark of 7.30 meters (23 feet, 11 inches), which he accomplished en route to winning the 2016 BIG EAST Outdoor high jump title.
