NCAA West Region - Declared Athletes

INDIANAPOLIS - Five Marquette University track and field student-athletes will compete at the West Preliminary Rounds of the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 29-30 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Thursday.

The Golden Eagles will be represented in Arkansas by junior William Koeck and redshirt junior Bret Hardin in the men's hammer throw, freshman John Krzyszkowski in the men's javelin, redshirt senior Spencer Agnew in the men's 1,500-meter run and senior Carlye Schuh in the women's long jump.

The trip marks the second-consecutive year that Koeck and Schuh have qualified, while Agnew and Krzyszkowski will each make their first NCAA preliminary round appearance. Hardin also qualified in the hammer throw as a freshman.

Last season, Marquette sent six student-athletes to the preliminary rounds in Austin, Texas.

Schuh, the BIG EAST Conference indoor and outdoor long jump champion, will kick off action for MU's contingent at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at John McDonnell Field. The Appleton, Wisconsin native is Marquette's long jump record holder and enters the meet ranked 31st in the region with a season-best mark of 6.06 meters (19 feet, 10.75 inches). She sat 24th in the region prior to last year's meet where she fouled on all three attempts and failed to record a distance.

Koeck returns to competition at the West Preliminary Rounds after a 32nd-place finish at the 2013 meet in Texas. The junior enters the meet seeded 29th in the region after becoming the first student-athlete in Marquette history to top the 200-feet plateau with a toss of 200 feet, 11 inches at the Cardinal Twilight on Friday evening. Koeck was a Second Team All-American in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships and captured BIG EAST titles this year in the weight and hammer throws.

Hardin, who redshirted the 2013 outdoor season, has gone back and forth with Koeck for much of the year in the hammer throw and sits second in program history. The Acworth, Georgia native placed second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships and will be making his first appearance at the preliminary rounds at 10 a.m. on Friday morning. He is 39th regionally with a season-best mark of 60.59 meters, (198 feet, 9 inches) two feet shorter than Koeck.

Krzyszkowski will compete in the men's javelin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Mississauga, Ontario native became the Marquette men's record holder in the event at the first meet of the outdoor season on March 14 at the USF Open in Tampa, Florida. Krzyzkowski has topped that mark in four subsequent meets and won the event at the 2014 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on Sunday, May 11 with a personal-best of 65.31 meters (214 feet, 3 inches), good for 28th in the West Region.

Agnew will also run at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and is the final student-athlete to qualify in the men's 1,500-meter run. The Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin native has a season-best time of 3:46.50, which he recorded on April 18 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. That mark is the fourth-best mark in Marquette history.

All four Golden Eagles are looking to advance through their respective first rounds to the NCAA Championships on June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
