Golden Eagles Head to 2011 NCAA Championships West Preliminary Round

MILWAUKEE - Six athletes will represent the Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams Thursday, May 26 through Saturday, May 28 at the West Preliminary Round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., at historic Hayward Field.
Sprinters Tyler O'Brien and Kyle Winter will compete in the 200-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively, while Blake Johnson and Nick Szczech will represent the distance runners in the men's 10,000-meter run. Freshman Bret Hardin will compete in the men's hammer throw, while his counterpart on the women's side, Jamie Roth, will throw as well.
O'Brien, Johnson and Szczech will make their second trips to the preliminary round as O'Brien competed in 2008, while Johnson and Szczech both ran in 2010. Winter, Hardin and Roth will make their debut appearances this season.
Events begin every day at noon Central time in the field events, while Winter will be Marquette's first athlete to compete Thursday at 8:50 p.m. CT in the national first round of the 800-meter run. Winter is ranked 42nd in the region and will compete in the sixth and final heat. The top three in each heat, plus the next six fastest times will advance to the national quarterfinal at 7:05 p.m. CT on Friday.
Johnson and Szczech will follow Winter on Thursday in the national semifinal of the men's 10,000-meter run, the evening's final event at 9:50 p.m. CT. The top 12 finishers in Eugene advance to the NCAA Championships on June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Friday's competition will kick off with Jamie Roth in the trials of the women's hammer throw at noon CT, where the top 16 throwers advance to the region's finals and the top 12 will then move onto Des Moines.
Hardin will compete in the men's hammer throw at 5:30 p.m. CT.
The first round of the 200 will take place Friday at 8:10 p.m. CT, when O'Brien will take part in the fifth heat. The top three in each preliminary race, plus the next six fastest times will advance to the national quarterfinal at 4:50 p.m. CT on Saturday.
