NCAA West Preliminary Round Begins Thursday For Track and Field

MILWAUKEE - The eight Marquette University track and field student-athletes qualified for the 2010 NCAA West Preliminary Round will begin competition Thursday, May 27 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
The three-day event will whittle the field of 48 in each event down to the top-12 competitors. Those advancing will compete on June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
Senior Rachel Thiel will be the first Golden Eagle to compete when the women's shot put begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Thiel is the school record holder in the event with a top throw of 14.96 at the SIU Spring Classic on March 26.
Following Thiel on Thursday will be junior Olivia Johnson in the 1,500-meter run, with the first round taking place at 5 p.m. If Johnson were to advance to the quarterfinals she would compete Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Friday afternoon, Jeff Kluge will compete in the hammer throw at 3 p.m. as he attempts to break Damian Anisko's school record. The men's steeplechase will be held at 8:30 p.m. with junior Peter Bolgert and sophomore Blake Johnson competing. Senior Jayne Grebinski will follow in the women's steeplechase at 9:10 p.m.
On the final day of competition, senior Erynn James, who ranks 10th in the West Region in the high jump will compete at 4 p.m.
The final athlete competing will be junior Nick Szczech in the 5,000-meter run at 8:45 p.m.
