June 14, 2012
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University sophomore-to-be Elisia Meyle will compete in the women's 5,000-meter run Saturday, June 16 at the 2012 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind. The event is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Central time at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex.
"Elisia started to come on strong at the end of the outdoor track season," assistant track and field/head cross country coach Mike Nelson said. "She sustained an injury that slowed her at the end of the indoor season and the beginning of the outdoor campaign. This meet with be a nice conclusion to a great year for Elisia. She has battled back from adversity and now she is ready to race some of the best juniors in the nation."
Meyle, who recently completed her freshman year with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, will aim to place among the top eight competitors in the event and gain All-America status.
The native of North Aurora, Ill., ran the 5,000 meters three times during the outdoor campaign and notched a season-best mark of 17:24.89 at the Dr. Keeler Invitational on May 11.
Meyle improved throughout her freshman year after beginning her career as Marquette's top finisher at each of the final four cross country meets during the 2011 season.
Should Meyle advance out of Bloomington, she would compete for the United States at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain from July 10-15.
