Elisia Meyle 10th in the 5k at USA Junior Outdoor Championships
June 16, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Marquette University sophomore-to-be Elisia Meyle placed 10th in a time of 17:52.60 Saturday evening in the women's 5,000-meter run at the 2012 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind.
"It was a very strong effort today for Elisia in the 5k," assistant track and field coach Mike Nelson said. "She ran a very intelligent race as she started at the back of the pack and slowly worked her way up. She just missed Junior All-America status by not finishing in the top eight, but she did run the second-fastest time of her career. Considering the heat and humidity, she did well. The last mile when other ladies were dropping out, she hung tough. I was really happy with the way she raced."
Meyle, who recently completed her freshman year with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, missed Junior All-America status as the top-8 competitors in the event earned that honor.
Oregon's Allison Woodward won the event in a time of 16:15.27, while Stanford-signee Cayla Hatton was the other American to qualify for the World Junior Championships in the 5k with a mark of 16:24.87.
The meet will conclude Sunday afternoon at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex with the women's 3,000-meter run at 3:45 p.m. Central time.
The native of North Aurora, Ill., ran the 5,000 meters three times during Marquette's outdoor campaign and notched a season-best mark of 17:24.89 at the Dr. Keeler Invitational on May 11.
