MILWAUKEE - Marquette University senior distance runner Peter Bolgert was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country University Division First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

"I am really proud of what Peter has achieved athletically and in the classroom through a tremendous amount of effort," Marquette head track and field coach Bert Rogers said. "It is special to be named a first team All-American in anything and it is a well-deserved honor since he has worked so hard in both his crafts. We are looking forward to a special fifth year from him in 2011-12."

Bolgert becomes the first Marquette student-athlete to earn first team honors from CoSIDA since women's volleyball player Martha Meyer earned the recognition for the 1996-97 school year. The Sheboygan, Wis., native also earned second team honors in 2010, making him the first multi-year recipient from MU since women's distance runner Amy Erickson earned second team honors in both 1996-97 and 1997-98.

He is the only student-athlete to represent the BIG EAST Conference on either of the top two teams and is joined by third team member Matthew Gibney of Villanova.

The mathematics and physics major holds a 3.98 grade point average and is a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member. The Sheboygan Lutheran High School graduate also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors in 2010, following his participation at the West Preliminary Rounds of the NCAA Championships, where he finished 25th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Bolgert finished among MU's top-five at every meet during the 2010 cross country season and helped the men's distance medley relay notch the second-fastest time in school history at the 2011 BIG EAST Indoor Championships by running the 1,200-meter leg. After earning a redshirt during the 2011 outdoor campaign, Bolgert will be able to compete as a fifth-year senior in both the 2012 indoor and outdoor seasons.

He was joined on the Academic All-District Team V First Team by teammates Brice Cleland and Nick Szczech

The women's Academic All-America teams, where MU's Olivia Johnson is a finalist, will be announced Thursday morning.
