Marquette Sends Four to USA Junior Championships

MILWAUKEE - Marquette University freshmen track and field athletes Kristen Gaffey, Carlye Schuh, Zack Grese and Bret Hardin will compete Friday, June 24 at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field.
Competition for the Golden Eagles contingent will begin with Grese in the men's 10,000-meter run at 11:30 a.m. Central Time and continue with Gaffey in the women's shot put at 12:20 p.m. CT. Hardin and the men's hammer throwers will begin at 12:50 p.m. CT, while Schuh will conclude the day for Marquette in the women's long jump at 1:45 p.m. CT.
The athletes that advance from this weekend's championships will compete in the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships on July 22-24 in Miramar, Fla. The top two finishers in each event in Eugene will be invited to compete as members of Team USA.
Hardin was spectacular during the outdoor season for Marquette, setting the freshman hammer throw record and the No. 2 distance in program history with a toss of 187 feet, 1 inch (57.03 meters) at the Stan Lyons Invitational on April 30. The Acworth, Ga., native also competed at the West Preliminary Rounds of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 27.
Schuh set the Marquette record in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 6 inches (5.94 meters) at the Stan Lyons Invitational on April 30. The native of Appleton, Wis., also notched her name in the Marquette record book in the 100-meter dash and the triple jump during the outdoor campaign.
Grese competed in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs during the outdoor season, while Gaffey threw the discus and hammer in addition to the shot put.
