CLOVIS, Calif. - Two Marquette University freshmen competed at the USA Track & Field Junior Championships as Monique Felix (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) placed fifth in the women's heptathlon and Terrance Howard (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center) finished sixth in the men's discus at the three-day event held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, California.

"What a fun weekend for Monique and Terrance," said Marquette Head Coach Bert Rogers. "It is a great experience for those two to get to compete at a national meet and compete well. I am looking for both to contribute big next year."

Felix burst onto the scene as a freshman this season, earning BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Meet honors at both the conference indoor and outdoor championship meets after winning the pentathlon and heptathlon, respectively. She showed no signs of wearing down during Friday and Saturday's competition, placing fifth amid a collection of the top elite young athletes from across the nation.

The Sheboygan native set personal-bests in five of the seven events and recorded the fourth-best mark all-time at Marquette with 5,070 points in her fifth-place overall finish. She recorded three top-three finishes, including using an impressive finishing kick to win the 800-meter event.

Felix started the event off with a ninth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 14.61 seconds, followed by an eighth-place effort in the high jump (1.58 meters). She made up some ground in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 10.23 meters to take third place.

She would take eighth in the 200-meter dash (25.56 seconds) to conclude day one of competition. On day two, she got things started with a strong sixth-place showing in the long jump (5.52 meters). She would close out the event very strong with a third-place mark and personal-best throw in the javelin (35.75 meters), followed by her come-from-behind win in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:22.45.

Howard was equally impressive, setting a big personal-best with a discus throw of 55.73 meters (182 feet, 10 inches). The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native bested his old mark by nearly 24 feet when he threw 47.43 meters (158 feet, 11 inches) in a win at the Illinois Twilight back on April 23. He placed third in the event at BIG EAST Outdoors with a mark just shy of that, to go along with a pair of top-three finishes in the shot put and hammer throw as well.

The USA Track & Field Junior Championship meet concludes a long season for both as they now look ahead to the start of the 2016-17 season come December.
