WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Marquette University sophomore thrower Samantha Kennedy captured a gold medal Saturday morning in the women's hammer throw at the 2012 Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.

Kennedy topped the field with a toss of 50.85 meters (166 feet, 10 inches) to claim the event title over 10 other competitors. The event runner up notched a distance of 48.89 meters, roughly two meters shy of Kennedy's mark.

The Surrey, British Columbia native competed earlier this summer at the 2012 Canadian Track and Field Trials and has been listed on watch lists for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
