Track and Field Names 2014-15 Captains
Nov. 13, 2014
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams announced their 2014-15 team captains this week. The four men and four women who were named captains earned their leadership roles based on team voting.
The men are led by redshirt senior Bret Hardin, junior Anton Rice and seniors William Koeck and Glenn Lawrence Jr., while redshirt senior Kathryn Koeck, junior Tatyana Pashibin and seniors Haley Loprieno and Katie Tolan anchor the women's team. Seven of the eight team captains have earned BIG EAST All-Academic honors at least once in their time at Marquette.
Hardin is one of the two men's captains to represent the Golden Eagles' group of throwers. The Acworth, Georgia, native was a 2013-14 All-BIG EAST competitor in the weight throw and the hammer throw. Hardin also competed in the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, where he placed 18th in the hammer throw. At the team's annual awards banquet in September, Hardin was named the most improved member of the men's team.
William Koeck also leads the throwers this season and looks to build upon a 2013-14 campaign in which he was named to the NCAA All-America Second Team in the weight throw. The Winneconne, Wisconsin, native won the BIG EAST Championship in the hammer throw and the weight throw last season, and holds the MU program records in both events. Koeck also was named the Most Outstanding Men's Field Performer at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and the men's team MVP for the second year in a row.
The men's sprinters are represented by Glenn Lawrence Jr. The Oak Park, Illinois, native ranks in the top-10 in Marquette history in both the 60-meter and the 200-meter indoor runs. Lawrence also ran the lead leg for the 4x100-meter relay team that took fourth at the 2014 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
Finally, Rice is the lone male long sprinter in the group. The junior from Omaha, Nebraska, has the third-fastest 500-meter time in MU history (1:04.22) and took third at the 2014 BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
On the women's side, Kathryn Koeck will lead the throwers. The Winneconne, Wisconsin, native ranks second in program history in the hammer throw and eighth in the weight throw. She also placed fourth in the hammer throw at the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
The women's distance runners will be led by Loprieno. Originally from Algonquin, Illinois, Loprieno has been a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team each of her first three years at Marquette and also competes for the women's cross country team.
Tolan will lead the women's long sprinters this season. The Brookfield, Wisconsin, native ran the 400-meter leg of the Golden Eagle distance medley relay team that took seventh place at the 2014 BIG EAST Indoor Championships. She also finished 10th at that meet in the 500-meter run.
Pashibin will represent the women's jumpers. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pashibin was the BIG EAST Indoor Champion in the pentathlon, the outdoor champion in the heptathlon and was an All-BIG EAST performer in the pentathlon, heptathlon and outdoor high jump in 2013-14.
The Golden Eagles kick off their indoor season on Friday, Dec. 5, at the Blue & Gold Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana.
