Track & Field Announces 2016-17 Schedule
Nov. 14, 2016
MILWAUKEE – Marquette University head coach Bert Rogers and his coaching staff have announced the men’s and women’s track and field schedule for the 2016-17 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Both teams are coming off historic 2015-16 seasons in which the women swept both the BIG EAST Championship indoor and outdoor titles, while the men won the league’s outdoor championship following a runner-up finish at indoors.
“It’s a well-rounded schedule,” said Rogers, who enters his 10th season guiding Marquette. “There are a lot of strong meets in the Midwest during the indoor season, so we’ll be staying close to home, which is nice, but during the outdoor season, we spread our wings a little bit and travel to some warmer weather places. This year encompasses all of that and we feel really good about it.”
This indoor season features 10 meets in all and will begin once again with the Blue & Gold Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Dec. 2. It will mark the 10th season in a row the Golden Eagles will start the year at Notre Dame. With there being two weekends in the month of December preceding finals week, MU has added a second fall semester meet as it will be heading to nearby UW-Parkside for the Parkside Fall Finale on Dec. 9.
The MU women will look to defend their BIG EAST indoor title, while the men seek to reach the top of the podium for the first time when the 2017 BIG EAST Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-25) take place at Ocean Breeze, N.Y. The season will conclude with the NCAA Championships (March 10-11) at Texas A&M.
“Ocean Breeze is a beautiful facility with a fast track and in a cool location,” Rogers said. “We had a very successful meet there last year and we‘re looking forward to that again this year.”
The outdoor season starts off with the Black & Gold Challenge hosted by Central Florida, March 17-18. It will be one of 15 scheduled meets, including postseason competition. The Golden Eagles will host the Marquette Duals at the Shimek Track and Field Facility on April 7, welcoming UW-Milwaukee, UIC and UW-Parkside to Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles will make their annual trip to the west coast to compete at the Mt. SAC Relays (April 13-15), Pacific Coast Invitational (April 13) and Bryan Clay Invitational (April 14). Following the Illinois Twilight (April 22), MU will gear up for the historic Drake Relays (April 27-29) where many of the nation’s elite athletes gather to compete in one of the nation’s most elite regular season meets.
The 2017 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships (May 12-13) will make a return to Villanova after last year’s installment ventured to Ohio for the first time.
“We’re excited about heading back to Villanova,” Rogers said. “They just did a remodel of the facility and they’re going to be able to do some neat stuff with the meet and the fan experience. It will be exciting to go and take part and try to defend our BIG EAST titles.”
The season will conclude with the much-anticipated NCAA West Prelims (May 25-27) in Austin, Texas and the NCAA Championships (June 7-10) in Eugene, Oregon, followed by the U.S. Senior and Junior Championships (June 22-25) in Sacramento, California.
