Track & Field Announces 2016-17 Team Captains
Nov. 29, 2016
With such prominent talent and leadership returning for the Golden Eagles, it wasn’t an easy group to narrow down as four women and five men were chosen to lead their respective squads. The women’s side is coming off a clean sweep of indoor and outdoor BIG EAST Conference championships, while the men captured the outdoor crown following a runner-up indoor finish in 2015-16.
The four captains on the women’s side all return as All-BIG EAST performers from a season ago. They are juniors Cassy Goodrich and Maya Marion, and redshirt juniors Alison Parker and Gemma Tedeschi. Meanwhile, seniors Brandon Bell, Dwayne Dash Jr., Nate Gomoll, John Krzyszkowski and Joel McBride are poised to lead the men’s team.
Parker is the lone returning captain from the women’s side, representing the distance group as she enters her senior campaign. Last season, she claimed All-BIG EAST honors for the second time in her career after her 4x800 relay and the DMR teams claimed second and third place, respectively, at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
Representing the sprinters will be Goodrich, who is coming off yet another banner season in which she earned All-BIG EAST honors in three events at both the indoor and outdoor league championships, while also setting school records in the indoor 400 (53.97 seconds) and outdoor 200 (24.18 seconds) and 400 (53.73 seconds) in 2016. In addition, she was a NCAA West Prelims qualifier for the second straight year in the 400-meter dash.
Marion, who represents the throwers, swept both the indoor and outdoor BIG EAST shot put crowns in 2016 and has now won three-of-four BIG EAST titles in the event through her first two seasons at MU. Taking the lead representing the jumpers will be Tedeschi, who returns as the reigning indoor BIG EAST champion in the pole vault and is coming off a runner-up finish at outdoors.
On the men’s side, Bell ran the anchor leg on the 4x100-meter relay team that won the BIG EAST outdoor championship with a school record time of 41.77 seconds. While Bell represents the sprinting core, Dash will do the same for the jumpers after breaking out during his junior year, winning the long jump at the BIG EAST Championships on the way to his first trip to the NCAA West Prelims.
Gomoll leads the distance group in 2016-17, while Krzyszkowski and McBride guide the throwers. Krzyszkowski will vie for his fourth BIG EAST gold in the javelin this upcoming outdoor season. Last year, he finished 15th at the NCAA West Prelims, took the bronze at the Canadian Championships and qualified for the NACAC Under-23 Championships in El Salvador where he placed sixth.
McBride claimed All-BIG EAST honors as well, taking third in the weight throw during the indoor season before earning runner-up honors in the hammer throw during outdoors.
The Marquette men’s and women’s teams will open the indoor season on Friday, Dec. 2, at the Blue & Gold Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
