Marquette Track & Field Names 2012-13 Captains
Dec. 4, 2012
MILWAUKEE - Head coach Bert Rogers has announced eight team captains for the Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams for the 2012-13 school year. Seniors Cheldon Brown, David Carbajal, Chanel Franklin, Sarah MacCourtney, Jack Senefeld and Kyle Winter, along with juniors Hannah Frett and Kristen Gaffey will represent their respective event groups.
"I am very pleased with this year's group of captains," Rogers said. "Each of them is well respected by their teammates on the track and off and will provide strong leadership throughout the season. They are all fine student-athletes in every sense of the word and have represented Marquette well in their careers at MU."
The Marquette sprinting group is bolstered by the return of Franklin and Winter, the reigning BIG EAST Conference Indoor 800-Meter Run Champion, for their senior campaigns in 2013. Franklin, a Milwaukee native, and Winter from Wales, Wis., have been integral members of Marquette's BIG EAST Championship representatives since their freshman years in 2010.
Franklin and Winter have each competed in three indoor and three outdoor conference championships, while Winter represented the Golden Eagles at the West Preliminary Rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2011.
Brown has been a consistent point scorer during his time at Marquette, and has scored at each of the five BIG EAST Championships in which he has competed. The Springfield, Ill., native sits fifth and third in Marquette history in the indoor and outdoor high jump, respectively, and aims to approach the program record in both during his final campaign in Blue and Gold.
MacCourtney, a former tryout walk-on who joined the program midway through her freshman year, recorded the fourth-best height in the outdoor high jump last season before competing in her first BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
The lone fifth-year senior to be named captain, Carbajal looks to make his fourth appearance at the indoor conference meet in 2013 and his third at the outdoor championships. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native has fought through injury issues in his career and could rise into the program's top-10 list in the shot put.
Gaffey will represent the female throwers and is one of just two juniors to earn the recognition. Gaffey has posted top-10 finishes in the shot put at all four BIG EAST Championships in which she has competed and ranks in the top seven at Marquette in the indoor and outdoor events.
Frett is the other junior to be named captain and will represent the women's distance squad. Frett, of nearby Waukesha, Wis., has been a stabilizing force for the Marquette women the last few years and has represented the Golden Eagles at both the BIG EAST and NCAA Great Lakes Regional cross country championships in 2011 and 2012.
Senefeld, who has competed in every event from the 1,000- through the 10,000-meter run, also served as team captain for the men's cross country squad during the fall. The native of Plover, Wis., has competed at the last three BIG EAST Cross Country Championships for the Golden Eagles and ran at the outdoor track and field championships in both the 1,500 and the 10k in 2012.
The Golden Eagles begin the 2012-13 indoor season on Friday, Dec. 7 at the Blue and Gold Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
