MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams begin the 2012-13 indoor season Friday at the Blue & Gold Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
Events at the Loftus Sports Center are expected to begin at 4 p.m. Central time with the field events and will conclude following the men's 4x400-meter relay at roughly 8 p.m. CT. Teams from Detroit-Mercy and DePaul will join Marquette and the host-Fighting Irish.
"Expectations for this meet are to see what we can do and where we are at through our fall training," Marquette head coach Bert Rogers said. "If we can do some really good things off of what we have done this fall, it sets us up really well for the indoor season. We are looking to be in peak shape at the end of January and into February."
The meet marks the sixth time in as many years that the Golden Eagles have kicked off their indoor campaign at the Blue & Gold Invitational, and the first of three indoor meets at Notre Dame in which MU will compete in 2012-13.
"The opportunity for us to go race on a big, fast track at Notre Dame is beneficial," Rogers said. "It is the same four teams who are there every year, the schedule is nice and quick and the whole trip comes together nicely for us. With finals coming up, this meet has minimal impact on our student-athletes' study time and is against quality competition. This meet just works out great for everyone involved."
Marquette juniors Kate Hein and Michael Saindon are returning meet champions in the women's 500-meter run and the men's high jump, respectively. Saindon set his indoor personal best at last year's meet with a height of 6 feet, 7 inches (2.01 meters), which tied him for sixth in Marquette history.
Cheldon Brown will join Saindon in the high jump as he aims for his first meet title at ND after finishing as runner-up as a freshman and third in the event each of the last two years.
Senior Kyle Winter will compete in the men's 500-meter run, an event in which he did not compete during last year's indoor campaign. Winter placed fourth in the 1,000 meters at the 2011 Blue & Gold Invitational and was the runner-up in the 500 as a sophomore in 2010-11. He captured the 500 crown at the meet as a freshman in 2009-10 by posting a then-Marquette freshman record time of 1:04.50 (also then-third best in MU history).
Fellow senior sprinter Chanel Franklin will run in the 60- and 200-meter dashes on the women's side. Franklin placed fourth in the 200 at the meet last season after winning the event as a freshman and sophomore.
After redshirting last year's indoor campaign, senior Lauren Darnall returns to the meet in which she set the Marquette indoor record in the pole vault in 2010. Darnall, whose school-record mark is 12-8.75 (3.80 meters), will be joined in the event by junior Abby Croft.
Following Friday's action the Golden Eagles will have more than a month off from competition before travelling to Madison, Wis. on Saturday, Jan. 12 for the Badger Track Classic.
