Dec. 10, 2009
MILWAUKEE - The throwers from the Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the Cyclone Holiday Preview Friday at Iowa State University. The Golden Eagles will compete only in the shot put and weight throw, which will begin at 2 p.m. at the Lied Recreation Center. "We would like to finish off the year on a high note, after a good fall of training," associate head coach Michael Koenning said. "We are more focused on getting in the right groove and it is a good way to head to the January portion of our schedule." Senior captain Rachel Thiel excelled in last weekend's Blue and Gold Invitational, winning the shot put with a BIG EAST qualifying distance of 14.12 meters. Thiel will be accompanied by teammate Kelley Corcoran in the weight throw. At the Blue and Gold Invitational, Thiel finished fourth in the event with a distance of 14.36 meters, followed by Corcoran in seventh place with a distance of 14.09 meters. Senior captain Jeff Kluge finished third in the weight throw last weekend with a distance of 17.26 meters. Jonathan Kusowski followed Kluge, finishing seventh with a distance of 15.83 meters. David Carbajal, Eric Matuszewski and Patrick Stuart will also be competing in both events. Fifth-year senior Matuszewski will lead a group of six throwers in the shot put after earning the team's top finish in the event last weekend. Junior Joe Kohut will be solely competing in the shot put.
