RICHMOND, British Columbia – Sophomore thrower Samantha Kennedy of the Marquette University women’s track and field team was honored as the BC Athletics Junior Female Athlete of the Year at the BC Athletics 2012 Awards Banquet on Saturday, Dec. 1 in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.

“Being named BC Athletics Junior Female Athlete of the year was a great honor,” Kennedy said. “This past season was filled with many up and downs but it did have an extremely great ending. I praise God for all of the accomplishments that I had this past year. Winning this award was a step in the right direction for me and my end goal of competing in the Olympic Summer Games in the future.”

Kennedy earned the provincial honor after claiming gold in the hammer throw at the 2012 Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28.

The Surrey, British Columbia native also competed at the 2012 Canadian Track and Field Trials and has been included on watch lists for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“I’m very proud of Sam and what she was able to accomplish this past season,” Marquette associate head coach Mike Koenning said. “The first year of college is a tremendous change, but Sam was able to make a smooth transition and make great improvements in her throws.  She was tested by a very physically taxing season that took her from her January start of indoor season through the end of July, but she persisted and had great meets each week. She performed very well in her all of her championship meets and gained so much valuable experience along the way.  This award is a great way to cap her 2012 season as we now look forward to her 2013 season.”

Kennedy finished fifth in the hammer throw at the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Championships as a freshman and looks to build on that mark in her second year with the program in 2012-13. She earned freshman of the year accolades from the Marquette women’s squad as well as Academic All-BIG EAST honors during her first campaign.

She trains with the Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club where she is coached by Richard Collier.
