Johnson and Bolgert Finish One-Two at Crusader Open
Sept. 2, 2011
VALPARAISO, Ind. - Led by seven of the top ten runners, including meet champion Blake Johnson, the Marquette University men's cross country team captured the Crusader Open title Friday evening at Sunset Hills Park in Valparaiso, Ind.
"Blake just blew everybody away," fifth-year head coach Mike Nelson said. "It was really a dominating performance by Blake and Peter Bolgert. They really ran well and we were happy to see that up front."
Johnson and fellow senior captain Peter Bolgert cruised to the top two spots in the meet with times of 15:26.3 and 15:38.9, respectively. Junior Patrick Maag was the fourth place finisher in 15:53.4, while Jack Senefeld, Chris Spudic, Spencer Agnew and Connor Callahan rounded out the top 10.
As a team, the men notched 22 points, while the second-place University of Notre Dame had 34.
The women's team placed third and was led by freshman Kenzie Vicker's 13th-place in 19:11.1. Sophomore Hannah Frett and juniors Christina Sliepka and Jessa Hackman finished 14th, 15th, and 16th, respectively. Senior Kate Horan was the fifth MU women's runner to cross the finish line and 20th overall.
"Competition was pretty stiff on the women's side and Kenzie Vicker ran well. We had some women who got out maybe a little too hard and were affected by the heat. Everybody had to deal with the same conditions though."
The women totaled 78 places in the meet, while Northwestern had 25.
Temperatures hovered in the 90s in the late afternoon.
The Golden Eagles return to action Fri., Sept. 9 at the Badger Open in Verona, Wis., at the Thomas Zimmer National Cross Country Course.
