Cross Country Captures Both Team Titles At DePaul Invitational

LINCOLNWOOD, Ill. The Marquette cross country squad returned to action Friday at the DePaul Invitational and took home overall crowns on both the men's and women's side. Jayne Grebinski also captured individual honors in the women's event.
"On the men's side Nick Szczech ran a really strong race and Blake Johnson was right behind him," said head coach Mike Nelson. "I think we ran pretty well on the men's side and I am happy with our effort. The women looked really strong and dominant and I thought they looked great. Overall I was really happy with how the meet went."
Nick Szczech led the men across the finish line in the four-mile run finishing in 20:00.82 for an average mile time of a just above five minutes per mile. Sophomore Blake Johnson finished fourth in 20:23.65, while freshman Connor Callahan led a group of five MU runners who finished 9-12.
Taking home the top honors in the women's race was Grebinski, who crossed the finish line in 14:28.51. Juniors Olivia Johnson and Kristin Pelzel placed second and third, respectively, while Anna Weber, Molly Arenberg and Sarah Verdoliva rounded out the top 10 in fifth, seventh and ninth.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Sat., Sept. 19 at the Midwest Cross Country Meet in Kenosha, Wis.
