Men's Cross Country Captures NIU Huskie Open Crown
DeKalb, Ill. - The Marquette University men's cross country team claimed the top spot at the NIU Huskie Open Friday afternoon at the NIU North 40 Cross Country Course, while the women earned a second-place finish.
MU was led by seniors Connor Callahan and Jack Hackett, who placed second and third overall with six-kilometer times of 19:06.71 and 19:25.75, respectively. Callahan's time was just four seconds off DePaul's Eddie McDaniel's race-best time of 19:02.34.
Freshmen Cody Haberkorn and William Hennessy made a splash in their first career races. Haberkorn placed fifth overall in the event with a time of 19:28.54, while Hennessy was right on his tail, finishing just a second behind at 19:29.58.
On the women's side, Marquette finished second behind Northwestern. Sophomore Elisia Meyle and freshman Molly Hanson were the lone Golden Eagles to finish in the top 10. Meyle turned in a personal best five-kilometer time of 18:17.67, while Hanson finished her first career race in 18:22.13.
Northwestern's Audrey Huth was the top women’s finisher with a time of 17:42.01.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 14 at the National Catholic Championship in Notre Dame, Ind. The Marquette men finished second and the women third at the event in 2011.
