MILWAUKEE--The Marquette cross country squad competed at the NIU Huskie Invitational on Saturday, finishing second on the women's side, while the men ran solidly but did not place as they did not have enough runners..

"Things went well today," said head coach Mike Nelson. "I was impressed with how our runners dealt with the adverse weather conditions. Times were slow across the board with how hard it was raining and how sloppy the course was."

Sophomore Laurie Dalrymple was Marquette's top female finisher, placing eighth with a time of 19:23. Sarah Verdoliva and freshman Katie Horan finished one second apart, capturing 13th and 14th place, respectively. Sophomores Maureen Keane and Dani Owen, and freshmen Bekki Misanin and Courtney Kelly rounded out the finishers for the Golden Eagles.

"Laurie ran a really nice race today and finished strong," said Nelson. "With how our women who raced did today, I really feel confident about how our squad looking."

The women finished second behind Wisconsin, and ahead of UWM, Green Bay, NIU, and Augustana.

On the men's side, freshman Blake Johnson and senior Andrew Craig each finished in the top ten, with Johnson finishing fifth in a time of 27:06, and Craig running a 27:33, good for ninth place. Freshman Garrett McKnight ran a 28:03, finishing in 12th place while fellow freshman Patrick Keeley was Marquette's other top finisher crossing the line in 19th place with a time of 28:29.

"I was really impressed with how Blake and the other freshman did today," said Nelson. "With this being their first 8K race, they did well."

Three Marquette men ran unattached at the Huskie Invitational, with freshman Jon Newman running a 28:25, while sophomore Mike McCarthy and freshman Billy Schlottke were the other two unattached runners for the Golden Eagles, finishing 23rd and 24th.

The cross country squad will next be in action at the Notre Dame Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. on October 3.
