Marquette Women Place First, Men Fourth, at Midwest Collegiate Invitational
Sept. 15, 2007
KENOSHA - The Marquette cross country teams continued to have success on the course, as the women earned a first place finish, running a 5K, at the Midwest Collegiate Invitational, in Kenosha, Wis., and the men's team placed fourth, running an 8K, with a score of 98. Senior Cassie Peller finished second with a time of 17:39, while sophomore Jayne Grebinski finished in 17:42, for fourth place. The Golden Eagles had their seven runners finish in the top 20. Sophomore Ana Weber placed tenth (18:20), senior Kaitlyn Chambers was 12th (18:36), freshman Kristin Pelzel finished 15th (18:43), and freshman Dani Owen was 19th finishing in 18:48. The men's team was led by senior Scott Mueller who ran a 24:57. Freshman Nick Szcech earned tenth place with a time of 25:37, while freshman Brice Cleland finished 12th with a 25:38. Junior Mark Kopecki ran a 26:25 and freshman Peter Bolgert finished in 26:37. Three of Marquette's five runners were freshman, running in their first 8K race. Head coach Mike Nelson was happy with the results and how the teams have started the season. "I was pleased with the way we ran. Our times were good and it was a fairly tough course. With our seven women finishing in the top 20 ahead of everyone else, it shows how deep we are," Nelson said. "I was happy with the men too. I think had we been able to get some more guys in the mix and not had injuries, we could've placed better. Overall it was a pretty good meet."
The cross country teams will send a squad out west to compete in the Bill Dellinger Invitational, on Sept. 29 in Eugene, Ore., while another squad will travel to Chicago, Ill. to run in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, also on Sept. 29. |
