Cross Country Competes Well at Greater Louisville Classic
Sept. 30, 2017
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Marquette University cross country teams competed at the Greater Louisville Classic hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission at EP Tom Sawyer Park on Saturday. The women placed 15th, while the men took 18th out of more than 30 Division I teams accounting for more than 300 runners in each race.
For the fourth time this year, Jessica Parker led the women’s side. She placed 41st overall with a time of 17:24.8, while Jennifer Parker and Mary Hanson also placed in the top-100 with sub-18-minute times.
“I thought the women did well,” Nelson said. “Jessica ran a fantastic race with Jennifer and Mary right behind with solid efforts.
“Overall, a very solid run,” Nelson added. “We were 15th out of 33 Division I teams. I think we need to work on getting our fourth and fifth runners a little bit closer to the top-three.”
For the men, Daniel Pederson was the top finisher on the team, taking 74th overall and turning in a career-best time of 24:50.8 – quicker than 5-minute mile pace. Alec Miller and Aric Miller highlighted the team’s top-three.
“I was really impressed with Daniel Pederson’s sub-25-minute time. A really nice PR for him,” Marquette head coach Mike Nelson said. “He got up there and really challenged the race, did a really nice job.
“As a team, we had an okay day finishing in 18th place,” Nelson said. “I was hoping that some more of the men would’ve been down near 25 minutes, but we had an okay day overall.”
The Golden Eagles will be back at it next Saturday, Oct. 7, competing at the Lucien Rosa Invite at Dannehl National XC Course in Kenosha. Race action is set to start at 10:30 a.m. Central time.
