LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Marquette University men's cross country team placed sixth in the gold race and the women's team 20th at the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

"We ran pretty well on the men's side this afternoon with a lot of our runners recording personal bests," fifth-year Marquette head cross country coach Mike Nelson said. "Blake (Johnson) and Peter (Bolgert) led us once again on the men's side and we got some solid performances out of the women as well."

Seniors Blake Johnson and Peter Bolgert both recorded personal bests to lead the men's squad with times of 24.32.87 and 24.41.30. Johnson placed 22nd overall, while Bolgert was 30th, marking the fourth-straight meet that the duo has paced the Golden Eagles.

Redshirt junior Jack Hackett, who has been working his way back from an injury, continued to climb up MU's standings with a third-place team finish in 24:57.16 to take 48th overall.  Hackett was ninth on MU at the season-opening Crusader Open on Sept. 2, sixth at the Badger Opener (Sept. 9) and fourth at the National Catholic Championships (Sept. 16).

Junior Connor Callahan followed Hackett in 58th place (25:01.18) for MU, while Jack Senefeld (61st, 25:03.72), Patrick Maag (62nd, 25:06.50) and Anthony Gedwill (89th, 25:25.75) rounded out MU's top seven.

The women were led in the gold race by freshman Elisia Meyle in 89th place (18:24.26), while senior Wisconsin-transfer Alyssa Beste was 99th overall in 18:26.92.

The University of Michigan took first in the women's gold race with 81 total places, while Purdue won the men's gold race with 113 total places.

E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park is the site of the 2011 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29.

"It was a great opportunity to view the course and I am happy we came down and participated this weekend. We need to know how to run this course at the end of the month at the conference meet and this should allow us to have a better idea of how to handle what it will throw at us," Nelson said.

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Oct. 14 with the men"s team at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Verona, Wis., and the women at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill.
