MADISON, Wis. - The Marquette University men's cross country team placed 18th, while the women took 17th place Saturday afternoon in the Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. The men were led by senior Brice Cleland's 64th-place finish in 24:37, while the women were paced by Olivia Johnson (21:39) in 70th place.

"Even though the men placed 18th, I thought it was definitely one of the best meets ever for a Marquette men's cross country team," head coach Mike Nelson said. "The men were close to some very good squads in the standings and I think we can do even better than we did today."

Junior Blake Johnson and sophomore Jack Senefeld followed Cleland with times of 24:48 and 24:51 to finish 84th and 89th, respectively. Senefeld was the top finisher for the men at the National Catholic Invitational on Sept. 17 and is in his first year of competition with the cross country squad. Fellow sophomore Connor Callahan also finished in under 25 minutes with a time of 24:56 to place 97th. Senior co-captain Peter Bolgert was the other male runner in MU's top five.

Juniors Kate Horan and Bekki Misanin followed Johnson for the Marquette women with times of 21:58 and 22:28, respectively. Senior Laurie Dalrymple and junior Carly Condon were the other MU women in the team's top five.

"The women got going today and most of them ran personal-best times," Nelson said. "I was pretty happy with how they did in a very competitive field."

Indiana University won the men's race with 43 total places, while Princeton's Donn Cabral was the top finisher overall in 23:29.

BIG EAST Conference-rival Syracuse took home the meet title on the women's side with 89 total places, while Florida's Charlotte Browning won the women's race in a time of 20:14.

The men's race included seven teams ranked in the top-30 of the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Poll, while five ranked teams participated on the women's side.

The Golden Eagles return to action at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 16 in Terre Haute, Ind.
