Cross Country Performs Well at UW-Parkside
Oct. 7, 2017
KENOSHA, Wis. – The Marquette University men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Lucian Rosa Invitational hosted by UW-Parkside on Saturday.
Several of Marquette’s top-seven runners on both the men’s and women’s sides received some extra rest, while others tried to take advantage of an opportunity and get another look at the Dannehl National XC Course, host site of the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 28.
On the strength of putting five runners in the top-10, the Golden Eagle women placed second as a team behind Wheaton (Ill.), while the men’s team placed five runners in the top-20 to finish third.
“I'm very glad we took advantage of this opportunity,” Marquette head coach Mike Nelson said. “Some different athletes got the chance to lead our squad and this was great for their development.
“We had a mixed bag of results as some ran better than others, but we learned a lot and will use this experience to help us race better in the future.”
Nora Keller paced the squad with a third-place finish, while Caitlin McGauley, Emily Foley and Linda Varela were close behind to take fourth through seventh overall. Hannah Gorin took 10th with Emma Moravec, Alison Parker and Brynn LiaBraaten finishing 12th, 14th and 15th, respectively.
Marquette’s top men’s finisher was Kevin Ryan, who placed 11th overall with Danny Peterson right behind in 12th. Matthew Cavanaugh came in 14th with Josh Urban and Ryan Dvornik in 16th and 20th, respectively.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Oct. 13, traveling to Peoria, Ill. to take part in the Bradley “Pink” Classic. It marks the team’s final tune-up before hosting the 2017 BIG EAST Championships.
